Why Some People Dream in Black and White?

Blog Post by TellMeMyDream.com

Dreams are in many ways similar to the waking experience for us, in that we hear, see and feel emotions. However, most people process emotions in dreams differently than you process information in your dreams. The absence of color in your dreams means that you have no access to process your emotions in the dream.

In the age of colour TVs and HD images, it is only natural that we experience dreams that manifest in the form of colour. Nowadays, people have black-and-white televisions, so they see and experience color in real life when they dream black-and-white. Dreams that manifest themselves in black and white are often attributed to older people who spent much of their childhood in a monochrome television age.

Our eyes perceive the color black as an object that absorbs the entire spectrum of visible light. The colour white, on the other hand, is the result of light that is reflected and charged by the visual receptors of the eyes. Therefore, the color black in dreams can be frightening and evoke emotions that look like we are afraid for our lives.

Each color seems to represent the emotional state that stimulates the dream and its images. The color white in a dream means purity and rebirth potential of the conscious mind. White in dreams means purity of mind and clarity of thought.

When you see the color black around you, for example, you dream of being thrown into a bottomless barrel. If you keep seeing black in your dreams, it could be a wake-up call that you are about to experience something phenomenal. It is also common to dream of wearing a white wedding dress to an event where the light white is the color of everything you are going through.

The good thing is that we remember our dreams because they are the same as our waking experience, so we rarely start confusing dream and reality. Once we know the meaning and interpretation we can take from our dreams, no matter how trivial they may seem or how little we remember them.

While most of us have the ability to dream in any color, there is a percentage of people who don't. A small percentage of these people tend to dream in color only when the rest see bright colors in their dreams or when they are aware of a specific color in their dreams. Recent studies and experience, however, suggest that some people do not dream black and white or of any color.

Dream research conducted in the 1940s showed that three-quarters of study participants said they had never seen color in their dreams, but a recent study reversed that. The study gathered people who were at a difficult stage in their lives and asked questions about their dreams. The researchers did not know exactly what they found, but the dreams were said to have occurred to people who had watched many black-and-white television shows and movies in their youth.

Some studies have found that the majority of young people dream in color while older people dream predominantly in black and white. Even people over 55 who grew up with little or no access to color television reported as dreaming about a quarter of the time in black and white. While we can collect information about dream experiences from other monitors of brain activity during sleep, it is difficult to know whether someone is dreaming in black, white or without color when it comes to color.

While most people report remembering colors in their dreams, some say they have never seen them before. If you have ever dreamed in black, it is imperative that you dive into your unconscious for meaning. Even if you had a colorful black-and-white dream, there is a reason for it, and it can tell you a lot about how you process information and emotions in your waking life.

The second explanation is that people lose the ability to dream with age. The color white in a dream can be an indication that things are changing for the better in your life. Maybe you are trapped in a rut and one day everything will look better.

A new study published in Consciousness and Cognition reports that our perception of dreams in color (black and white) correlates with age and early childhood exposure to television. While Murzyn acknowledges that it is impossible to verify dreams in black and white, media exposure could change the way the mind reconstructs dreams when we wake up. Some have suggested that people who report on dreams in black and white are less credible as reporters, suggesting that they are less inclined to dream of something else.

A study on Dream Memories in 2008 suggested that black-and-white dream reports correlated with the general color outcome and consciousness of the waking world : people with the best overall color outcome in waking states were more likely to report colored dreams than people with a less detailed color result. The cross-group differences in recall quality of black- and-white dreams suggest that true grayscale dreams are more common in people who have black-and-white media experiences.

People who dream in black and white, for example, do not necessarily do so in detail, but are colour-oriented in general aspects of life. At first, they do not dream of the color of objects, but do not specify which objects are considered black or white.
